Ice Climbing Ice Axe BladeA lot of peeps who being there ice climbing career will believe that the pick of their ice axe will last forever, or at least long enough to allow you to save up enough money to buy a new pair.

Ice Climbing in certain climates, and especially the climate in the UK, lead to quicker pick degradation than say, climbing on pure water Ice in Norway.

The main reason for this is we are more likely to encounter large amounts of mixed climbing on routes in the UK and have to use our axes on rock, snow and ice as the weather is milder and more changeable.

It's not all doom and gloom though, as you can re-sharpen your axe when needed and prolong the picks life before you have to replace it. sharpening the pick can be tricky and if not done correctly can result in destroying the pick.

Lots of climbing stores will sharpen your pick ( and ice screws) for you for a small fee and this is a really good idea if you're feeling unsure on how to approach the task yourself, for the more adventurous of you, this video below from the Ibex Mountain guides will show you how to sharpen you pick at home, and to save yourself a few extra coins, which is always good!
